About Gill

“Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know.” ~ Pema Chodron

Initially from Aberdeen, Scotland, I worked in the business world, running my own companies for several years. This is where I experienced first hand the reality of unremitting stress – with raging cortisol levels and shallow breathing being my default, something eventually had to give.

Fate it seemed had a different plan for me and after a series of disasters – personally and professionally – I found myself in need of therapy.

It took getting to a very low point before I finally embraced the notion that life was getting out of control and I was heading to a very dark place unless I did something about it.

“I was looking to re-start my career when I was drawn to hypnotherapy.”

As luck would have it, I stumbled upon an ad in the local bookshop looking for volunteers for a trainee therapist and I willingly offered myself as guinea pig.

I had in total six sessions of hypnotherapy and found it made a huge difference: I learned how to relax and feel calm, more confident and in control of my life. And able to make sensible and strategic decisions for the future. A friend also commented that I looked better (the fine lines of stress that had begun showing on my face seemingly smoothed out after just one hypnotherapy session!)

A year or so after my own experience with hypnotherapy, the opportunity to train as a therapist myself came about. So I decided to train as a hypnotherapist and counsellor and have now been in private practice for over 20 years.

“Although we are all initially resistant to change, it is only by embracing change that we can leave behind the old, unhelpful patterns that no longer work for us.”

Helping my clients to engage with their own coping skills is enormously satisfying. There is no better feeling than helping someone towards happiness.

Recent research using MRI techniques has proven the efficacy of hypnotherapy in a clinical setting. In a new study, researchers in Finland found the way our brain processes information is fundamentally altered during hypnosis. The research helps to understand how hypnotherapy produces changes in a persons thoughts and behaviour.

Hypnotherapy is a cooperative process between therapist and client that depends for its success on empathy and trust.

“I feel hugely grateful to share my therapeutic secrets with my clients – to help raise them out of their dark places, to watch them change, blossom and grow.”
